Carmel Valley Lodge - new owner/bad experience


The new owner as of nearly a year ago of the Carmel Valley Lodge is a difficult man, Mr. Tong Kim. Our best advice is to stay away. 'Gio', the General Manager when we booked our reservations, is rude and incompetent. Ownership changed during the past year, unbeknownst to us when we booked 21 relatives in the lodge for a 3 day stay this August. We had been going here for years with our well behaved small dog and always enjoyed it and the people who ran it. Three weeks before our stay, our confirmed rates were increased. Reasons given varied, including %u2018we made a mistake%u2019. We were told we could take it or leave it. Two days before we were to arrive, we were told that we had to immediately wire $4400., the entire cost of our stay for all the rooms of our group, otherwise the units would be rented to others. We had to comply because we had relatives coming from as far away as eastern Canada for a family gathering. Management had previously given written confirmation for accommodation with no request for upfront money. I had asked if they wanted a deposit but was told 'no'. I was even told the last week that the previous email confirmations were not 'contracts'. When I tried to discuss this with Gio, she hung up on me. I called back, politely (I was nervous about the whole situation) and she hung up again.

It is unfortunate to see how the place has gone downhill since the previous long term owner. Fortunately the pool had opened the day before we arrived, having been closed for a period of time by the Health Dept. The Spa was still closed and was in deplorable shape. %u2018Breakfast%u2019, which used to be so pleasant in a large area, is now something to behold, with weak coffee and with Mr. Kim, the owner, reigning over multiple small dishes of chopped up fruit and veggies which he spoons into a larger bowl for each person and then chops and smooshes it up while lecturing you that if you eat it you will live to be to 170 y.o. We went to a nearby wonderful coffee shop for breakfast each day after that.

We had come down 3 weeks earlier to arrange final details for a family party in Carmel Valley, and stayed both times in Unit A. The same light bulbs that were out the first visit were out the second. The phone in the room was dead both times. At least they had swept the porch. The first time it looked like it hadn%u2019t been swept since they had bought the place. The grounds need help. It used to be so well kept up. Between the time we arrived and the time we left (3 days) there was a new General Manager, Alex, an inexperienced but pleasant young man. Just before we were to all leave, we got back from breakfast in town to find they had moved one of our party out of her room before she had handed in her key, and this was 2 hours before checkout time. She walked into her room and it had been all made up for the next guest. She asked for her belongings which they retrieved. We will not be going back under these circumstances.
